Resources for the UIS and the Springfield community to address racial inequality, discrimination, bias, and police brutality.

This resource list has been developed by the UIS Coalition Builders, an affiliate of the National Coalition Building Institute, as well as members of the UIS Diversity Center, UIS Women’s Center, UIS Gender & Sexuality Student Services, and members of the faculty at UIS. 1. Support local & national organizations working for racial justice, change inequality, and oppression

  • Ìý–ÌýA national nonprofit advocacy organization focused on addressing the complexities of being a Black student in the American education system.
  • UIS Coalition BuildersÌý–ÌýJoin the UIS Coalition Builders team and/or invite a workshop in your classroom, student organization, or sponsor one in your department/college.

2. Educate yourself about issues affecting the Black/African-American community and learn how to become a better ally.

  • (Attorneys offering legal services, action items for people who cannot donate or protest in person, bail funds, memorial funds, mutual aid projects, and other organizations and organizers who need financial support.)
  • Importance and development of Racial-Ethnic-Cultural identity in U.S.: Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum’sÌý
  • A selection of essays from diverse scholars, including a social psychological perspective of how all people in a racialized culture/society create/maintain race and racism in daily interactions, etc., an essay on racialized mass incarceration among Black Americans, and an essay on implicit racial bias in associations with crime and animality:ÌýÌý

3. Take a class at UIS that teaches about the history of White Supremacy and continued systemic racism in the United States. Fall Semester 2020:
